The US State Department has approved a possible Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to Denmark of AIM-120D-3 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAMs), the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced on 29 October 2024.
The potential sale, which is worth an estimated USD 744 million (EUR 685.49 million), has been passed to the US Congress for final approval.
Denmark has requested to buy 203 AIM-120D-3 AMRAAMs and up to nine AIM-120D-3 AMRAAM guidance sections to include precise position provided by either Selective Availability Anti-Spoofing Module or M-Code.
The following non-Major Defense Equipment items will also be included: spare AMRAAM control sections; missile containers; support equipment; spare parts, consumables and accessories, and repair and return support; weapons software; classified software delivery and support; technical documentation; and various aspects of engineering, technical, logistics and programme support.
“The proposed sale will improve Denmark’s capability to meet current and future threats by increasing its combat capability. Denmark will use these munitions to defend NATO allies and its partners. Denmark already has AMRAAM in its inventory and will have no difficulty absorbing these articles into its armed forces,” the DSCA stated.
The AMRAAMs will be used to arm the growing Royal Danish Air Force (RDAF) fleet of F-35A Joint Strike Fighters, of which 27 have been ordered. The first Danish F-35 arrived in its home country in 2023. The F-16AM/BMs still operated by the RDAF also carry the AIM-120.
The principal contractor for the Danish AMRAAM sale will be RTX Corporation’s Raytheon business out of its facilities in Tucson, Arizona.
