It took the Republic of Ireland 36 minutes to take the lead in the first leg, but they opened their account at Tallaght Stadium after only three as Russell struck on the rebound after a Marissa Sheva strike was palmed away.

The home side continued to dominate and doubled their lead on the night when Jessie Stapleton flicked on Anna Patten’s delivery for Carusa, who fired high past Tatia Gabunia.

With 10 minutes to go until the break, McCabe fired a penalty over the crossbar after Carusa had been brought down in the box by Mariam Kalandadze.

McCabe got her name on the scoresheet after the break however, with the Arsenal player’s low strike finding the back of the net after she had played a clever short corner to Denise O’Sullivan.

Having comfortably navigated the second leg in front of a record 8,745 crowd at Tallaght, the Republic of Ireland are now a two-leg tie away from qualifying for the European Championship for the first time.
