KINGSTON, R.I. — Rhode Island men’s basketball assistant coach Duane Woodward was honored at an AEL Basketball gala in Limassol, Cyprus for his successful career and contribution during his time with the European professional team.
During his three years in Cyprus, Woodward won the 2002-03 and 2003-04 Cyprus National Championship with AEL Limassol. Following the national championship, Woodward led AEL to a Cyprus National Cup in 2004.
With the arrival of Woodward to the squad in 2002, AEL was a force to be reckoned with and was crowned with its only European title after winning the newly-established 2002–03 FIBA Europe Regional Challenge Cup. Woodward was the team’s top scorer, averaging 26.7 points per game as a part of the victory that was only the beginning of the team’s European successes in the years to follow.
Following the unexpected success in the Challenge Cup, Woodward and AEL were awarded a berth in the FIBA Europe League. In the following season, AEL officially made their debut at the top level of FIBA Europe competitions.
During the gala honoring the club’s success, Woodward’s jersey was presented to the president of Cypress, Nikos Christodoulides.
“Being honored for the determination, commitment and winning spirit that led to our Championship was a humbling experience,” said Woodward. “I appreciate the acknowledgment of my efforts and achievements by Payabl AEL. It was great being back in Limassol reliving the memorable moments with my teammates, coaches and the fans — something I will never forget!”
Woodward enters his third year on the sideline under head coach Archie Miller. The Rams officially open the 2024-25 season against Fairfield on Monday, Nov. 4 at 8 p.m. The game is part of a doubleheader with the URI women’s team, which hosts Stonehill at 5:30 p.m.
