Szijjártó will attend an event where Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Syrian Foreign Minister Bassam Sabbagh will also be present.
According to the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), the conference is intended to serve as a rival to the Munich Security Conference.
Politico notes that Szijjártó’s visits to Russia and Belarus are no longer surprising; however, his potential connection with the Syrian regime, supported by Moscow, could signal improved relations between the parties.
Szijjártó’s visits to Belarus
It is worth noting that Péter Szijjártó became the first high-ranking official from an EU country to visit Belarus after dictator Alexander Lukashenko’s regime falsified election results and began repressing the opposition.
Szijjártó made such a visit in February 2023, claiming at the time that he had conveyed a call for peace to Belarus.
By October 2023, Szijjártó returned to Minsk, this time for a conference on Eurasian security, reiterating Budapest’s stance that it is “looking for peace.”
