We welcome the European Parliament’s resolution of October 24, 2024, on the “Situation in Azerbaijan, violation of human rights and international law, and relations with Armenia,” which exposes Azerbaijan’s appalling human rights record, disregard for international law and aggressive, militaristic posturing in the region and toward Armenia.
We particularly welcome the European Parliament’s call for full implementation of the International Court of Justice’s orders, engagement in constructive dialogue with representatives of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh to ensure their safe, dignified and swift return to their historic homeland, the release of all Armenian detainees in Azerbaijan and the preservation of Armenian properties and cultural monuments.
Securing the collective return of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh to their homeland through genuine negotiations between Azerbaijan and Nagorno-Karabakh representatives is essential for lasting peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
We urge and hope that the European Union will also make efforts to provide a platform for the commencement of these crucial negotiations, ensuring that the process is inclusive and supported by international oversight. The EU’s role is vital in facilitating dialogue and promoting a peaceful resolution to the ongoing crisis, thereby paving the way for a secure, internationally guaranteed return of the people, with full respect for their fundamental rights.
