Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Lipavský visited Bosnia and Herzegovina from 9 to 10 October 2024, where he held talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs Elmedin Konaković, members of the Presidency, including Chairman Denis Bečirović, members of the colleges of both Houses of Parliament and the High Representative of the International Community for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Christian Schmidt.
“The most important topic that resonates here in Bosnia and Herzegovina is EU enlargement and the enlargement process and bringing Bosnia and Herzegovina closer to the Union. The main point is that this year Bosnia and Herzegovina gained candidate status and now the question is how to open talks,” the Czech diplomatic chief said. “There are long-term exchanges of experience on how to adjust individual legislation or how to operate within the EU,” the minister added about Czech-Bosnian cooperation in the area of the Balkan country’s integration into the EU.
During the trip, Minister Lipavský confirmed Czech assistance to Bosnia and Herzegovina after the devastating floods that hit the country last week. Czechia donated one million crowns in humanitarian aid to the town of Konjic, which was one of the hardest hit areas. At the same time, the NGO People in Need, whose long-standing work in Bosnia and Herzegovina has been financially supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has amended an existing humanitarian project, and Czechia has set aside additional money to repair the damage.
On the agenda of the meeting with partners in Sarajevo were bilateral political and economic relations, Czech support for Bosnia and Herzegovina’s integration into the EU, the internal political situation in the country and the situation in the region.
