On Day 1, it was Washington Sundar who stole the show on his return to Test cricket after three years. He finished with figures of 7/59, as New Zealand were all out for 259 in the first innings. Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway starred for New Zealand with half-centuries. India finished with 16/1 t stumps on Day 1 with Yashasvi Kaiswal and Shubman Gill at the crease. Rohit Sharma continued his poor run of form after he got out for a duck.

The Indian team is currently leading the WTC table but another mishap in the Pune Test would make their case difficult. They are well-positioned to secure a place in the WTC final for the third consecutive time but they have to be at their best in the remaining two Test matches in order to set the ball rolling.
