A renowned Cambodian journalist who was arrested and charged with incitement has been released on bail. That’s after pro-government media posted a video of him apologizing.
Mech Dara briefly spoke to reporters outside of jail in Kandal province on Thursday. He said he is grateful to those who supported him and helped secure his release.
Mech Dara had been held in pre-trial detention since October 1. He was detained over social media posts that authorities say incited unrest.
He’s known for covering human rights abuses linked to online fraud.
In the video published prior to his release by a pro-government news outlet, Mech Dara says he conveyed false information that affected the reputation of the country and its leaders. He also apologized and promised to stop sharing harmful content.
Western countries have voiced concern over his arrest and the state of democracy in Cambodia, including freedom of speech.
