NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte addressed the Conference of National Armaments Directors (CNAD), emphasising the urgency of enhancing defence production and planning across the Alliance. “Defence industrial issues are at the core of my agenda,” said Mr Rutte, highlighting NATO’s progress in increasing defence output, supporting Ukraine with munitions, and replenishing stockpiles, while calling for continued collective effort.
Held on 23 and 24 October at NATO Headquarters, the CNAD Autumn Plenary Session brought together representatives from Allied and Interoperability Partner nations. Discussions focused on defence planning and production, joint procurement, and standardisation, with a strong emphasis on strengthening engagement with partners in areas such as supply chain security and defence industry cooperation.
The CNAD plays a crucial role in delivering the interoperable capabilities required for NATO’s deterrence and defence strategies. Secretary General Rutte commended CNAD’s work, recognising Armaments Directors’ role in translating political objectives into actionable defence initiatives, benefiting both Allies and Partners.
The newly appointed Assistant Secretary General for Defence Investment and CNAD Permanent Chair, Tarja Jaakkola, highlighted the importance of inclusive engagement. Ms Jaakkola stressed the value of bringing NATO’s partners into these discussions, enabling a fully cooperative approach to the Alliance’s defence objectives.
