Greece’s Minister of Environment and Energy Thodoros Skylakakis and Egypt’s Minister of Electricity Mahmoud Esmat, agreed to take the next steps toward implementing the electrical interconnection between Greece and Egypt.
Following this decision, the national electricity transmission operators of both countries will promptly begin their participation in the project. Additionally, the two governments committed to supporting the project’s inclusion in the next, second consolidated list of Projects of Common Interest (PCI/PMI).
During his trip to Egypt, Minister Skylakakis also met with Egypt’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Hani Sewilam and they agreed to draft and sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on addressing the impacts of the climate crisis. This includes developing climate crisis prediction models, modern irrigation techniques, cost reduction for desalination and strategies for cross-border water resource management.
Finally, Minister Skylakakis held talks with Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi who agreed to draft and sign an MoU for cooperation in developing infrastructure for carbon capture and storage (CCS), a crucial element for achieving climate neutrality. Together, they plan to request regulatory changes from the European Commission to enable the export and storage of CO2 from Greece to Egypt, a move that is particularly important for Greek industry and will facilitate the advancement of related projects in Greece.
