Romania has taken a major step in animal protection by banning fur farming for chinchillas and mink, the only two fur industries in the country. The Romanian Parliament voted overwhelmingly in favor of the ban after nearly two years of political debate and tireless efforts by animal rights groups, including Humane Society International/Europe (HSI/Europe). Once the law takes effect in 2027, Romania will become the 22nd European country to outlaw fur farming, aligning itself with a growing global movement to end cruelty in the fur trade.
HSI/Europe’s executive director, Ruud Tombrock, praised the decision, calling it a pivotal step toward eliminating fur farming across Europe. He highlighted the growing public concern for animal welfare, as evidenced by the success of the Fur Free Europe initiative. According to a recent survey, over 67% of Romanians Support the fur farming ban, further underscoring the public’s opposition to the fur industry.
This decision follows an undercover investigation by HSI/Europe, which revealed inhumane conditions on Romanian fur farms. Footage showed chinchillas confined in tiny, dirty cages, only to be killed for their fur in cruel ways, such as gas chambers or neck breaking. The investigation sparked outrage, leading to more than 74,000 petition signatures calling for an end to fur farming.
Romania’s fur industry had been in decline for years, with the number of farms dropping from over 150 in 2013 to just a dozen by 2022. The ban also addresses concerns about the environmental impact and the potential spread of zoonotic diseases linked to fur farming. Across the globe, millions of animals still suffer on fur farms, kept in poor conditions until they are slaughtered for their pelts. With this new law, Romania joins a growing list of countries that are prioritizing animal welfare over the profits of the fur trade.
