LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Consumers Energy has new technology that aims to reduce power outages.
Consumers Energy is now using handheld infrared cameras to detect problems inside nearly 1,100 large electric substations throughout Michigan, which allows the power company to make repairs before they affect the public.
According to Consumers Energy, the infrared cameras helped avoid 19.9 million minutes of customer outages. The cameras allow crews to scan substation equipment to look for hot spots that aren’t visible to the naked eye. Crews can make repairs before those issues lead to an outage.
