Logistics center in Tokyo classed as evacuation site A Tokyo logistics center built by the developer Mitsui Fudosan has been designated as a natural disaster evacuation site for local residents.

Logistics centers are being built across Japan to cater to online shopping demand. Some of them are now being recognized as suitable for use in emergencies.

The Mitsui Fudosan six-story building was completed in September in Itabashi Ward. It has extensive storage areas and a large parking lot.

Areas around the building are known to be vulnerable to flooding from the nearby Arakawa River.

An official at the company said it is important for the facility to function not just as a logistics center, but also as a place that can contribute to the local community.

Residents during emergencies can evacuate to the building’s second floor. Two-weeks supply of food and water for 1,000 people will be stored there. The facility will also help distribute aid supplies.
