India’s foreign ministry made the announcement on Tuesday. It said the last time the two leaders officially met was in 2019.

Xi and Modi are visiting the central Russian city of Kazan to attend a summit of a group of emerging economies which include Russia, China and India.

Ahead of the gathering, Beijing and New Delhi reached an agreement on Monday on patrolling arrangements in disputed border areas.

Clashes have occurred intermittently between the two militaries along a tentative demarcation line. Both sides suffered casualties during fighting in 2020.
