Rough weather ahead for much of Japan Rough weather is forecast across much of western and eastern Japan due to unstable atmospheric conditions on Wednesday.

Weather officials are urging caution against lightning strikes, gusty winds, tornadoes, hail and localized downpours.

The Japan Meteorological Agency says the unstable conditions are being caused by warm humid air flowing toward a low pressure system moving over the Sea of Japan, accompanied by a front.

The weather is expected to continue through dawn on Thursday.

People are also advised to seek shelter in sturdy buildings when there are signs of thunderclouds approaching.

Parts of Miyazaki Prefecture saw more than 400 millimeters of rainfall in the past 48 hours. Officials are warning that even a small amount of rain could trigger landslides.

In the city of Nobeoka in the prefecture, a house was found buried after a hillside collapsed. One resident remains unaccounted for.
