Xi orders Rocket Force to improve combat capabilities China’s state-run media say President Xi Jinping has ordered the country’s missile troops to improve their strategic deterrence and combat capabilities.

This comes just days after Beijing staged a massive military exercise around Taiwan.

The news outlets say Xi gave a speech on Thursday after inspecting the training of Rocket Force troops.

Xi called on them to heighten their awareness of potential crises and combat capabilities. He also ordered the intensifying of troop training and an enhancement of combat preparedness across the board to safeguard national core interests.

The Rocket Force took part in the large-scale military drills around Taiwan on Monday. Beijing says the Taiwan question is at the core of China’s core interests.

Xi regards the administration of Taiwan President Lai Ching-te as separatist, at a time when the United States is increasing its engagement with Taiwan.

Analysts say Xi is seeking to keep in check the Lai administration and Washington.
