driving over harbour bridge is actually quite nerve-wracking. something about the lanes on there just doesnt feel right. I really feel like they have too many lanes. need to cut a lane from each side of traffic and widen the remaining lanes.

everytime i’m driving across the bridge i find it silly that there isnt a big divide between the oncoming traffic but i suppose they need to add lanes inbound during peak hour. As for me i never drive on the outside lane right next to oncoming traffic, way too scary!

I just got off a southbound bus that was stuck on the Bridge for almost an hour. There were cars on both lanes of the bridge moving but can see major blockages northbound trying to get on the bridge still

Can anybody explain why there isn’t a permanent crash divider in place? To suit changeable traffic flow coming in/out of the city?

And that’s why they call it the suicide lane. I always try and avoid it, especially when I’m on my motorbike.

I do wonder if with the Western Harbour Tunnel as well as the Metro reducing the demand on the Harbour Bridge, they can cut a lane off the bridge, have normal size lanes, and a centre barrier and not have the city stopped when someone does this every few months.

Using your phone to take a pic of someone else’s bad day is poor taste, OP.
How about not using your phone while you’re driving, too.
E: someone’s lost their life and OP’s chasing those internet points. Stay classy, OP.

A sad day, I travel the bridge often enough and the speed of some drivers is just crazy. Then you have the lane changers. On the weekend a car almost change lane onto on coming traffic (north bound).

WTF are these pictures of a family’s worst day imaginable doing on this sub?! Especially when they have clearly been taken by someone breaking the law and endangering emergency crews and other people around them. Shameful behaviour all round!
Where are the r/sydney mods to ban this to hell?

One confirmed dead… drove there literally 5 min before it happened.

Thanks for notifying. I heard the mass of sirens from my office in Wynyard, looked out the window saw a bunch of cops and police rescue trying to get through the traffic. Rip to the person who passed.

Bridge is closed in both directions, will probably be the case for hours with Crash Investigation Unit. Tunnel is open but heavy.
An awful situation, feeling for everyone involved and their families. Hope the one that’s critical will make it.

Another deadly head-on. The bridge needs a movable barrier. 70kmh road with people doing 80-85 on the regular, with a thin dotted line seperating the directions (and a confusing lane arrangement that changes with the peak). Other tidal flow systems use barriers, why can’t the bridge?

Why there isn’t a barrier between those two lanes is beyond me. RIP to those who lost their lives/life

I cannot stand driving over the bridge! I wonder what they can do, if not put in a crash barrier.Â

Damn. They better clear that by peak hour

This is why I avoid driving in the middle lane as there’s way too many nutters about.

the population has outgrown the harbour bridge. It’s pretty surprising we only really have three bridges going over the harbour

Just went over the bridge by train. Looks pretty bad, they got the police holding up tarps while the paramedics do their work.
Looks like cars are stuck in traffic. Managed to spot a car that has gotten itself stuck, likely while trying to do a U-turn.
Fatality unfortunately https://www.smh.com.au/national/nsw/harbour-bridge-traffic-at-standstill-after-fatal-crash-20241017-p5kj6r.html
I’m surprised it doesn’t happen more often.

Would love to see it a pedestrian bridge built!
