From the article:
Maureen McCormack (52) of Esker, Banagher, Co Galway, a former employee of the Bank of Ireland branch in Banagher, was originally accused of nine offences, including arson at the bank, when she was arrested and charged in October 2022.
She pleaded guilty to three theft offences on December 12 last, amounting to just under €200,000.
The first offence involved the theft of cash to the approximate value of €145,000 from Bank of Ireland between January 1, 2017 and October 6, 2021.
She also pleaded guilty to the theft of money valued at €33,419 from William and Anne Meleady at Bank of Ireland in Banagher on December 2, 2013, and to a third offence of the theft of €21,000 from Bernard and Pamela Golding on November 7, 2016.
All the offences were contrary to Section 4 of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act 2001.
She also pleaded guilty to damaging the bank by fire “without lawful excuse” on October 6, 2021.
I used to work behind the counter in Bank Of Ireland, but lost my job in controversial circumstances. An elderly lady customer asked me to check her balance one morning, so I pushed her over..
In fairness compared to the banks conduct and general thievery she is an amateur
White collar crime pays.
But 4 years for the dodgy box man providing a vital public service.
Arson?! Bit unexpected. Was she trying to burn records and it got out of hand?
She set fire to the bank as well? If this was a man, he’d be banged up, and it wouldn’t be a short sentence either
Justice is supposed to be blind but it seems some people are too good for jail. Some people steal 20e worth of goods and end up in jail. What this woman did would have resulted in a prison sentence for the average person. Same with nikki hayes but she used her media ties and managed to get special treatment from our courts: https://www.rte.ie/news/ireland/2024/1007/1474031-nikki-hayes/
Do the crime, don’t do the time!
At least the banks are now prosecuting these thieves. Years ago it was all hidden. I know a bank that actually closed down in a small town cos three successive bank managers were involved in illegal activity. None of them were even charged.
