Companies and universities in Japan are teaming up to fight the spread of disinformation amid the growth of generative AI.
Electronics firm Fujitsu has launched a project with NEC and academia to develop a system that can automatically detect fake information.
The companies are working with the National Institute of Informatics and six universities to combine their research and technologies.
They say the system will be able to detect suspicious information. It will then perform an in-depth analysis to determine whether it is true or fake.
The system will use a variety of methods to make its determination, including related news and images. The project will also study how digitally altered videos known as deep fakes are made. The aim is to learn how to better detect them.
Yamamoto Dai of Fujitsu’s Data & Security Research Laboratory says, “We believe we’ll be able to detect disinformation that is difficult to identify by collecting a wide range of data to provide a comprehensive analysis.”
The researchers hope to have the system up and running by the end of fiscal 2025.
