International trade fair promoting Chinese exports opens in Guangzhou The China Import and Export Fair, or Canton Fair, is underway in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, at a time of dwindling domestic demand in the country.

The large-scale international trade fair, which opened on Tuesday, is aimed at promoting sales of Chinese products, including household appliances, machinery, vehicles and others.

The fair’s organizers expect more than 130,000 buyers from regions including Southeast Asia, Europe and elsewhere to visit the event.

The value of Chinese exports has risen for six months in a row up to September compared with the same months last year.

But the outlook is uncertain due to moves in the United State and Europe to raise import tariffs on Chinese products, including electric vehicles.

A ranking official of a home security camera exporter said the company is keeping an eye on the trade relationships between China and other countries, and is trying to conduct business globally.

China hopes that exports will help drive its economy, amid dwindling domestic demand due to a prolonged slump in the real estate market.

Economists are waiting to see whether the fair will result in expanding the sales of Chinese products.
