US-based IT giant Google has announced a deal to purchase energy generated by small nuclear reactors.
Google said on Monday it signed the deal with Kairos Power, a US firm that develops small modular reactors.
It calls for Kairos Power to bring the first reactor online by 2030, followed by additional deployments through 2035 to supply 500 megawatts of power.
As the development of artificial intelligence speeds up, Google aims to meet growing demand for electricity with carbon-free nuclear energy.
Energy consumption at data centers in the US is estimated to roughly triple between 2023 and 2030, due to the widespread use of AI.
Experts say renewable energy alone cannot meet this huge demand while cutting emissions of greenhouse gases.
Last month, it was revealed that fellow IT giant Microsoft will get power from the Three Mile Island nuclear plant in the eastern US.
Amazon decided in March to purchase nuclear-generated electricity.
