India’s Tata Group chairman emeritus, Ratan Tata, has died at the age of 86. He led the group as chairman for about 20 years and put it on the global stage.
Since he became chairman in 1991, Tata Group has rapidly expanded to become a major international conglomerate. It now operates a range of businesses including steel and automobile companies.
Under Tata’s leadership, the group carried out high-profile acquisitions, including those of a European steel company and a British luxurious car manufacturer.
The group’s holding company, Tata Sons, announced on Wednesday that Tata had passed away.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered him in a social media message, saying, “Shri Ratan Tata Ji was a visionary business leader, a compassionate soul and an extraordinary human being.”
