I used to visit. A decade ago walking the ossuarys gave me the feeling of humanity might have learned something.
These days Ill prolly open a beer and light a spliff, and tell the dead :” ere we go again”…

This battle shocked people because there was really no comparison to it since Paris in 1870. And before that it would be decades if not a century between singular battles causing massive amounts of casualties in such a short time.
Fast forward 30 years and we were making Verdun look tame
Leningrad, Stalingrad, Shanghai, Budapest, Kiyv, Manila and more. Countless millions dead in short order. As if we almost challenged ourselves to do “better” than the last time.

And now, where there is near parity in armour and air power, there is a return to trench warfare, with associated high cost in lives for both sides in Ukraine. After seeing how one sided wars with the US have been since the 90s It’s been interesting, to say the least, how much the supposed no.2 has fumbled against Ukraine, leading to these heavily fortified, almost static front lines.
