President Yoon Suk Yeol announced establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership with the ten-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations(ASEAN), with an aim to further advance the two sides’ cooperation.
At the opening of the South Korea-ASEAN summit in the Laotian capital of Vientiane on Thursday, Yoon said the two sides are set to write new history based on their highest-level partnership.
The South Korean leader said Seoul will seek an all-encompassing and comprehensive cooperation with the regional bloc as a partner in joint prosperity, while continuing diplomacy with priority placed on the region.
Based on Seoul’s vision for forging solidarity with the ASEAN, Yoon promised to expand the common denominator in cooperation, referring to future industries involving artificial intelligence and smart cities.
He added that through increased people-to-people exchanges and education programs, the two sides are set to prepare for a future to lead in the fourth industrial revolution.
Yoon also vowed to enhance strategic coordination with the region, such as advancing cooperation in defense logistics and contributing toward the ASEAN’s efforts to bolster its cyber security capabilities.
