I feel like virtually every day I see another sidewall being torn up by workers, often even the same sidewalls over and over. Why is it done this way? Presumably this is to install services but if so why can't this be coordinated to avoid constantly doing this?

Most likely new fibre. Any logo on that pit cover?
Need to make extra money or how will they be able to afford the million dollars investment portfolios.
Construction/maintenance for the underground services.
The companies are only required to fill the holes and make it safe to walk across. They’re not required to restore it to the original look.
I also hate it. It looks so dodgy.
What annoys me is how long it takes once the job is done to put the paver back.
Cables and its much cheaper to use asphalt than concrete.
Nothings changed, in the 90’s in Paddington I watched them repave a side walk for a week, the day they finished the gas company came along and dug up their nice new shiny footpath right down the middle and filled it in with that black tar crap.
