most of slovaks know it as the nation’s no1 summer holiday destination, it’s even called “the slovak sea”. i haven’t spent much time there myself but i loved every minute. and the people who stayed there longer (not just by the sea) spoke highly of the country and its people. we are brothers. or maybe like very close cousins or something

When we visit Croatia, we enjoy listening to it, and even after returning home to Slovakia, we often find ourselves speaking Croatian for days or even weeks. I know you want to know what I think but instead I tell you a short story:
When I was a little kid, the dream of my parents were to see a sea. So they took me and we all together went with our renault laguna combi for a very long trip through hungary with my cousin and godfather. By a trip we eat homemade schnitzel with bread. I was listening to slovak hip hop crew H16 in my headphones.
When we came, we was looking for place to stay. Any of us didnt know the language so we talk with hands and legs and faces. We found random old guy close to beach in Ducé if he knows about some place to stay. And he told us he does. He owned it with his wife. It was in mid-reconstruction. We were from morning to late afternoon on a beach. I became red as hell. We made a lot of photos of us on beach. At evening, we went out to terrace to drink an alcohol and Karlovačko with owner and his family. I was playing with some kids of neighbourhood. It were there two pretty sisters. I like them. Then in some day we went to trip with ship eating there some fish (as I remember). When we get back to port, I went without thinking out with random people and lost. I was hysterically walking from side to side talk to people and then I met some Slovaks who were with us on a ship-trip. So they spoke to me and helped me find the way back to the port where my parents waited for me (because they read something about like when kid get lost the first thing what the kid does is its go back to the place it remember). Then, again, drinking and playing with kids of neighbourhood. Then back home. Fine trip. Croatia is fine. And Croats are fine. I like Croatia. I like Croats.

I was riding bicycle through Croatia in 2022. I was surprised how huge difference there is between seaside and inland.
30km from the sea and I felt like it was absolutely different country. And some parts of countryside where crazy empty. Like here in Slovakia every 5km there is a village usually with a church, small shop and a pub – there I was riding 50 kilometres and passed through several groups of houses and half of them were abandoned.

Here’s my hot take. I never understood why it’s so popular holiday destination for Slovaks. People spend 10 hours in car and €300 on gas for a roundtrip. The prices are bonkers, the beaches mediocre and overcrowded and the sea devoid of life.
I can fly in 2 hours for less money to a Greek island, eat cheaper food that tastes better and relax on a beach with views that are second to none.
