My suggestion of naming it after Moya Cannon so people can say ‘meet at the Cannon-ball?” clearly ignored by the powers that be

Bit of context for anyone who’s going start banging on about “preserving history” or some such. The now-Boland library was built in the late 60s. It wasn’t named after Berkley until 1978, about 11 years after construction, when some high up in College staff decided we should copy the American habit of naming College Buildings after Alumni. It was just “The New Library” originally.

Could they come up with a more contrived reason to rename it? I wouldn’t really care if it was named after some random lad who donated to the college or something but Berkeley is a giant in western philosophy and was an alumni of the college. Will we start seeing Yeat’s name ripped off things because of his political beliefs? Or is he just a tad too popular and well known as to cause too much backlash?

We are in the midst of a cultural revolution where fascists are dictating what we can say and think.

I have it on good authority it is to be renamed the Joe Duffffffffyyyyy Library, since he is TCD’s most illustrious graduate, and his significant intellectual contribution to Irish Life.

They should stop naming them after people altogether.

I went to Trinity, was really happy there, spent ages studying in that library, don’t mind at all that they changed the name. It’s still a great library with lovely corners where you can curl up and read. Nice new name. I like that it’s a woman’s name. There are enough buildings named after men.

They should name it after a Nigerian King…. Oh wait they dont want it associated with anyone that had a hand in slavery. My mistake.
