Submission Statement: Given the current discussion around Haitian migrants in the US, I figured it was pertinent to discuss the situation on the island. Both Haiti and the DR are situated on the same island yet the migration is almost entirely one way.
Nevertheless this is not the first time there have been tensions between the two. A few years ago the Dominican Republic amended its constitution to retroactively rescind citizenship from Haitians born on Dominican soil.
What makes this newsworthy is the sheer size. There are fewer than 11 million resident in the Dominican Republic. Thus in relative terms, this is mass deportation if there ever were one.
