  1. TikTok is bad, but I don’t understand why it is being singled out for this when Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and a dozen cable tv channels are designed to do the exact same thing.

  2. All social media is.

Attack them all equally, they deserve it when it comes to messing with young kids brains.

Then later in life the kid like brains of the old.

Remember “kids”, this has absolutely nothing to do with kids’ health and safety and everything to do with which country is siphoning all of your data.

  5. I’ve noticed a real shift in my world since these hyper-quick video social medias have been on the rise. I know social media has done some damage to my attention span, knowledge depth, and social spheres, but TikTok, Reels, Shorts, etc. really feel like something different and have made fundamental changes *so fast* in comparison. I literally feel it in my mind when I turn off one of those apps. And the jokes about going to grab your phone to call 911 only to impulsively tap TikTok/Reels are just *way* too close to home. This stuff is getting weird.

Yes, but all social media does this to everyone. Legislate all of them you cowards

  7. Facebook is digital heroin to racist suburban moms. AGs are not fuming about this because their donors told them not to.

  8. Dude I’m telling you there’s something to this argument. I will find myself going to watch Reels without even intending to (in a let me distract myself for no reason, not like involuntary movement lol). Then I’ll be scrolling for awhile and finally I’m like wait wtf am I even doing? It’s become noticeable to me how addicting it is, the, as the kids say now, brain rot, is a real thing imo.

My biggest worry is literally any search, even if you search “anything” shows up with soft core porn. And you can’t tell me it’s not showing up on all these kids apps either. There’s a serious problem going on with creators also using it to their advantage, advertising their OF and instagrams in ways that’s only appealable to children.

  10. Cheep dopamine is no better than drugs and addiction is the business model of social media

  11. Social media and the internet as a whole has needed regulation for a long time now. It’s been out of control.

Everything is meant to be addictive now. It’s no longer enough to get people to buy a product, you have to hook them. Microtransactions and “dailies” in games, music that’s just one small set of notes on a Macbook made to psychologically stick in your head, chips which have just enough taste to hook you and not enough to get you to feel satiated.

  13. I’ve never used tik tok but I would admit my time on instagram or Reddit is just as unhealthy. At least nicotine makes you feel something. Social media makes me feel numb

  14. This horseshit is a twofer for the American Right.

One goal is to quash anti-genocide video and anti-Israeli discussion among young people.

Another is to further demonize China (they’re hooking the kids! Fentanyl Social Media!) in preparation for WWIII in the South Pacific.

  15. Smartphones are only as smart as the user.

Use your phone to be on social media all day, you get stupid TikTok challenges and dumb “pranks”.

Use your smartphone as needed and to look up one off questions, you’ll have better mental health and stronger in real life connections.

You can’t stop stupid from being stupid. As Gump once said, “stupid is as stupid does.”

  17. Old-Bridge-5918 on

…it is all social media. Facebook is the biggest one till now which made entire social media this popular which became close to addiction!

  18. holy shit can we have one thread where r/technology doesn’t defend TikTok to the death

Yah, because Alphabet, Meta and all the other ones provide clearly wholesome content not geared to do exactly the same thing, those are the good ones, because ‘Merca

  20. Sounds like Congress might be reasonable for once make comprehensive blanket policies that protect EVERYONES data and how ALL tech companies operate and NOT single out one company.
