Need context. Let’s see a map where AAs are more than 13%, since that’s their national average.

1% seems like a strange threshold

Better title would’ve been; U.S. Counties where the African American population is less than 1%

hmmmm… what about a gradient? closer to 100%, darker?

southern MO and norther AR i would guess is because there were no plantations in those areas, thus no slaves brought in (also the whites that moved there were quite poor and could not afford slaves). Anyone else know if that is wrong?

What is the biggest city with less than 1% black? Laredo?

I look forward to a world where we stop keeping track of race.

So different west of the Mississippi with some exceptions. Also I am shocked to see a parish in Louisiana given I believe the state is the highest percentage AA.

Missouri is the most suprising here

Are the cities listed supposed to signify anything? They do seem to correlate to cities with larger black populations, while other major cities and even state capitols are left off the map entirely. Some cities have a dot but no name. SF Bay Area is somewhat strange with San Jose named, but SF and Oakland just get dots. Weirdly Marin has a fairly large dot…?

Ngl white and gray color combo works horrible for maps like these because of both of them being mostly associated with a lack of data. I know enough about US demography to differentiate which one is which but for someone clueless about it this is pretty unreadable. I’d suggest adding a simple two color legend or just change the gray color entirely to a basic one like red, blue or green

Which counties have highest European Americans population? White or grey?

Wait, Hawaii? WTF!?!

They can’t be everywhere when they’re only 13% of the population.

There’s no African Americans in Hawaii??

How do they count African Americans? 100% pure African genetics? 80% pure? 70? 1 drop rule?

Surprised to not see more Appalachian counties in White (deliberate color choice by the cartographer??). But raise the % number, keep it low, 3-5% and Appalachia would “light” up. I agree the 13% number would make a better binary map. But best would be a linear scale with several graded shades indicating higher proportions.

Is the central/northwest just not a vibe with African Americans? I mean it’s cold but it’s beautiful.

Laredo has less than 1% black population, and I’d also bet it has less than 50% white population.
