Wasn’t it’s height during the dynastic union with Portugal? At bare minimum it would’ve been before 1750 when they ceded half of South America to Portugal in the treaty of Madrid.

The Spanish territories of the Gulf of Guinea and part of Eastern Florida remain to be marked.

Crazy that Vancouver was once a Spanish colony

Seeing the map it made me wonder why Spain never had a sizeable colony in Africa.

This map is highly misleading and does not accurately reflect the level of control the monarchy had in each of those territories, nor how much settlers each region had. It’s straight up factually false in areas like Cascadia or southern Argentina/Chile.

I beg to differ. It was actually in 1494 after [the treaty of Tordesillas](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Tordesillas)
