Between 40,000 and 70,000 Lebanese “Canadians” live in Lebanon. This is not the first time Canada has had to evacuate its citizens from this war-torn region. Have people forgotten the massive boat lift in 2006?

The government has warned people *not* to visit since last October, but they continue to visit for vacation or live there full time.

    Why bother?

  2. So frustrating and still there’s going to be complaints that Canada isn’t doing enough.

    > Global Affairs Canada (GAC) says two flights chartered by the federal government to bring Canadians out of Lebanon left Beirut for Istanbul Thursday with just 275 passengers and 379 empty seats.

    > Shortly after Joly’s media availability, her department issued a press release saying those two flights collectively carried 275 passengers, not all of them Canadian. The department said the passengers included citizens of “like-minded countries” like Australia, New Zealand, Denmark and the U.S.

  3. This is a good in a way. Now there is absolutely no excuse when they cry for an air lift if it gets worse.

The Canadians in Lebanon have had months to get out by themselves, and lots of free seats on chartered planes now. If they’re still staying, they’re on their own

Good. Stop them now and don’t offer them again if shit hits the fan and they want to get out. Should have never offered them in the first place. Any Canadian citizen around the world traveling to countries with advisories issued against travel should pay their own way back “home”.

I’m not against Canada getting its citizens back home under sudden, unexpected circumstances where airspace and flights are cut off to a country, but these people have had almost a year to gtfo and decided not to.

Are we also evacuating Israel? Shouldn’t that be the priority since the western presence/occupation there is the source of this whole middle-east vs. the west conflict?

If they chose to live in Lebanon, security and financially in ruins it’s their loss. We should not be offering charter flights out. They had warning signs for arguably decades.

So far the only thing being offered is a reserved seat on a commercial plane to Turkey, for which the people have to pay the government back.

From Turkey they have to book their own flight. This should be costing us nothing yet.

But I agree with others. There should be no emergency evacuation. They should be clearly telling people “we are not coming to get you. Leave now!”

To be fair, when I was “offered” a US evac from Israel last year they did not tell us when to arrive at the airport until the day before, nothing but one piece of luggage and no pets were allowed, and we weren’t even going to be landing in the US. The flights were to Athens and Cyprus and then we were totally on our own. And crazy enough, we would need to be reimbursed the government for the cost after! I ended up booking a full priced normal flight instead.

I contacted global affaires to help my brother they said no we are not helping anyone. Get your shit done yourself

  10. People complaining about their tax dollars being wasted. You do realize these people will all have to pay for this service right? and it’s not cheap.

3-4x the cost of regular commercial flights.
