Imagine British tourists visiting Paris, France, proudly telling the local French people they’re from Britain. The French responded with, ‘Oh really, Britain (Bretagne)? That’s a lovely region in western France!’ The Brits, slightly confused, reply, ‘No, no—*Great* Britain (Grande Bretagne)!’ LOL!

Huh. I’ve been to Brest and didn’t know that this region is called Brittany. Interesting

  3. In Welsh, it is *Prydain Fawr* for Great Britain and *Llydaw* for Brittany. The latter seems to come from a word for ‘wide’ and is in reference to continental Europe itself, as in ‘these are the Britons on the continent’.

Not correct for Slovenija. The little one is called Bretanja, Slovenian language doesn’t have “y” letter and we very rarely use same two letters in a row outside compound words………

  5. Though Breton and Welsh translation are left off the map – probably the two most relevant. Breton because it’s the native language of the Breizh and Welsh because it’s the native language of Britain.

  6. Just to be pedantic, Great Britain is the name of the island so doesn’t include the Hebrides, etc. it also doesn’t have a flag, to my knowledge

  7. I would say that they usually add the “French” part to avoid confusion. Gran Bretaña y Bretaña Francesa.

  8. The accent is misplaced in the Greek translation of Bretagne. It should have been on the penultimate syllable.

  9. I just realized that Polish dish “fasolka po bretońsku”( bean in tomatoe gravy a la Bretonia ) probably comes from old fashion word :Bretonia …

  10. Bosnians and Serbians use “Bretanja”, I have no idea where “Brittany/Brittani” came from.

  11. “Bretanja” for Serbia and Bosnia. In Serbian there are no double letters, and in Bosnian (or Croatian or Serbian, all are more or less the same language) there definitely isn’t letter Y.

  12. For BCS it’s : “Velika Britanija” correct and “Bretanja” (utterly incorrect on the map), especially using “nn” and “y” the latter which doesn’t exist in BCS.

    that´s not Brittany, it´s Gália! Astérix vilage!![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|smile)

  14. This is one of the worst maps, I’ve ever seen.

“Бриттани” in Serbian? There is no word in Serbian with double t’s.

Brittany is called Bretanja (Latin)/ Бретања (Cyrillic)

I see other commenters noting the map is wrong for their languages as well.

    OP, delete this shit.

  15. Lol this map is highly inaccurate. In Serbian there’s no dobile t ever. This “translation” is literally English word spelled in Cyrillic.

In Serbian it’s called Бретања (Bretanja).

If this was done just by using Google translate this map is utterly useless…

Correction for Greek, Brittany is Βρετάνη.

Βρετανή is the female form of British.
