  1. And most of the people working on those dark areas are employees of the government.

Forgive me for any ignorance, but why does it seem like European unemployment rates are far higher than USA unemployment rates, and yet their economies still seem to tick over okay?

As examples, while US unemployment is around 2%, Spain’s overall unemployment rate is 11% right now, Italy is 6.5%, and France is 7.3%. When you stratify by youth unemployment it gets even worse, to 1930s Great Depression numbers. How are the economies of these EU nations functioning?

  3. No worries, Italians will do what they’ve done for 100 years and flee their country

  4. So sad for me as a South African to see the worst unemployment rate region in Italy doesn’t even come close to our national average

  5. It is an interesting map. However, it does not account for “lavoro nero” (i.e., non-contractual work), which is paid “under the counter”, in cash. This form of employment is rather common in the south of Italy, especially in the black-coloured areas. In a way, it indicates that about 20% of the people in the darker areas do not pay income tax and live off a parallel economy.

  6. At first, I was going to make a comment about the Amalfi Coast not seeming to be that high, then I looked closer and realized that it’s in the Salerno Province instead of Napoli. TIL
