Biden visits states devastated by Hurricane Helene US President Joe Biden on Wednesday visited areas impacted by Hurricane Helene. The storm was one of the deadliest to hit the US in decades, killing more than 180 people across six southeastern states and leaving hundreds of others missing.

Biden visited state leaders in South Carolina and assessed the damage firsthand. He said authorities need to “jump-start” recovery efforts.

Helene slammed into Florida last week and tore through Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. It flooded homes and roads, leaving many people stranded. Biden has ordered 1,000 military personnel to help deliver food, water and other supplies.

Biden said: “We’re working nonstop to provide the support that you need and the survivors need. You know, my heart goes out to everyone who experienced the unthinkable loss. But we’re here for you.”

Many residents of North Carolina found themselves cut off by the floodwaters, and they are still without power, cell service and running water.

Local resident Aaron Smith said: “There’s nothing left. The firefighters are telling us it’s going to be at least six months before we see our house again. And, frankly, I doubt very much that it will be that fast.”

Authorities say the cleanup will take years and could cost tens of billions of dollars.
