I know Lebanon was a part of the Ottoman Empire then a French Mandate after WW1 and the French and British made a bunch arbitrary borders in the Middle East after that which has caused so much of the conflict on the region. But can anyone explain perhaps in more detail why Lebanon has so many different religious groups in such a small area, particularly central Lebanon?

Majority maps can be misleading when assessing the cohesion of a group. Is there an ideological and cultural difference between the Shiites in the south and those in the north-east? Do the north-easterners also support Hezbollah as much or is it mostly a southern thing?
