Personally, I am very happy the government didn’t bow to the lobbying from vintners and resteraunt lobby groups.
They are absolutely gouging prices at this point

Diddums.
They would never have passed on the reduction to us punters anyway.
PhilosopherSea1850 on
They got their reduction during covid and gleefully kept it to them fucking selves.

Delighted for them. We actually need to learn to let failed businesses fall on their arse and stop using taxpayers money to prop them up.
No-Negotiation2922 on
Even if it was reduced to 9% there would be no reduction for the customer and then places would still put up their prices on any sight of an increase from their suppliers.

Let them close , others will emerge if need be .

They should reduce vat rates for single restaurants but not ones with pubs or hotels attached. Small family and small size restaurants are struggling at the mo

Never a peep from them about rents…wonder how many of them are landlords/benefit from high rents?
They squawk about stuff that benefits workers quick enough

I’d bet all the money in my pocket vs all the money in your pocket that if VAT was reduced to 9% prices would still increase a month for now.
Hotels can get fucked as well, absolute robbery prices most of the time, 2 over a bank holiday weekend can set you back as much as the full cost for 3 night and flights to a city in europe with enough left over to cover dinner on night 1.

I’m actually sorry for the decent restaurants out there that will struggle but, the hoteliers absolutely gouged the bejaysus out of the public post Covid and it would be politically dangerous for the govt to be seen to be rewarding them.

Your shit service, your price gouging, your miserly servings, your constant cries of wanting more, more, more, more. Get fucked.

Adrian Cummins whinging again, just as he did the whole way through Covid. I know it’s part of the job, but you’d swear every restaurant is owed success.

My local village has 4 independent coffee shops, 2 horsebox-type ones hanging on from covid attached to GAA club and GAA training ground plus a Costa, Dunnes cafe and Maccers. Not sustainable at all.

Im probably missing something here but I really dont get the fuss. I get that its ‘another’ cost but is anyone really avoiding a restaurant because the bill is €113.50 rather than €109? Id have thought the €8-9 pints, €40 house wines, aggressive service charge addition and poor quality food for the price charged are far more of an issue.
I tried to book a bar for after work drinks recently (12-15 people; finger food, tab for 2-3 drinks and then people / managers pay for the next rounds themselves), in Dublin City and it was a nightmare. One place in particular sent me a list of conditions and mandatory charges that was like a lecture; when I clarified what the budget was, they just never replied. Bar 2 had a minimum of 20 people for platters. Bars 3 and 4 never replied. I take it they are not one of the ones struggling, but its hard to have sympathy with the industry when places essentially refuse business

I’m glad the government didn’t cave. Rip off merchants don’t deserve it. There’s a pub I go to and the burger has doubled in price since covid. I’ve stopped buying food there when I go out. 4.5% isn’t the issue.

Fuck the hospitality sector. All capitalists when Taylor Swift is in Dublin and tourists need a room. They’ll argue supply and demand whenever it’s in their favour.

I had a burger and chips at a local place here outside Cork, and it was €22. All the while the owner chewed my ear off about how hard things were for him, how he was struggling to make ends meet, and how he was constantly feeling like he was being fleeced. I just sat there blinking while trying to eat my ~€3 worth of overcooked ingredients and wondering the same.

They need a better strategy more targeted ask than lower VAT. The government would probably help them if they were a bit more innovative.

I largely don’t give fuck if places close down as I can’t afford to go to them anyway.
