Not only hundreds of thousands of Swiss emigrated to the US – also the countries influenced each others foundations.

Really a glimpse of weirdness, thinking that the government of Aargau addressed the US as “our great sister republic beyond the ocean” in a feeling of deep fellowship.

Did you know, that the United States are our Sister Republic?

  1. Yeah, the weird toxic sister that makes everyone cringe by her simple presence.

The one embarrassing burden that sully the honor of the family.

I don’t really think it’s that weird, actually. There are a lot of cultural similarities that contribute to the fact that our political systems (i.e. the federalism and the two houses of parliament) are similar, whether the raging anti-americans in this sub want to admit it or not.

What I think is really interesting to look at is what the differences are that have led to such drastically different outcomes. I think the fact that Switzerland is not a two party system is probably the biggest one, but also that we don’t elect our executive branch directly. And the fact that we have a functioning safety net. That’s what makes us different from the US, and while correlation is not causation, I think it’s not a crazy assumption that these differences are the reason why Switzerland is so much safer and our standard of living is higher, and so these things are worth preserving.

Yeah we do know that, but we did a way better job with having seven presidents instead of one, and Trump…. would be in jail for years here, as the justice system still works.

  5. I mean, the Swiss system was directly copied from the US one, minus the presidential executive. It has never been a secret.

  6. Yes but as a US citizen who looked at immigrating to Switzerland it doesn’t feel that way.

Switzerland is setup to where it is not advantageous to immigrate to from the USA vs a country like France that has an amazing double taxation agreement that makes it very attractive because France acknowledges my pension accounts being taxed in the USA.

Did you know that there was a proposition from a few deputy of Switzerland and USA that wanted Switzerland to became a US state? At the beginning of the 20th century, Switzerland being squeezed between those huge empire, some people thought we would be better under the protection of our american sister.
