Conversion therapy targeting both sexuality and gender identity could have worse mental health outcomes

LGBTQ+ community members who have experienced forms of conversion therapy targeting both their sexuality and gender identity have even worse mental health symptoms than those exposed to just one of these conversion therapy types, according to international research. The team used data from a long-term LGBTQ+ health study, with 4,426 participants surveyed about their experiences with conversion therapy. Conversion therapy targeting their sexuality was reported by 3.4% of participants, while 1% recalled conversion therapy targeting their gender identity and 1% reported experiencing both. The researchers say the group that experienced both had the worst symptoms of depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and suicidal thoughts/attempts, with those who’d experienced any conversion therapy also likely to have more severe mental health symptoms than those who hadn’t. The researchers say many of the participants who reported conversion therapy were young enough to suggest these practices are still happening in the US, and many reported it was delivered by a mental health care provider, especially when it came to gender identity-based practices. The researchers say their findings support policies banning all conversion therapy.
