Why? Like why would the average NI resident want to subject themselves to the absolute fuckery of the ROI? Why would the average ROI resident want to inherit the social/political freakshow and environmental disaster (Lough Neagh) that is NI? Maybe both sides of the border should focus on fixing their shit before we see any more talk of reunification.

So more waste instantly then. Have there been a more ineffective party leader than Mary Lou? Taken Sinn Fein from most popular party in the country to weak 3rd and falling during multiple major cruises and constant government gaffes. She’s taken the wrong turn and tone at every available opportunity. Absolutely zero tactical nous.

  3. It would be surprising if they didn’t have a Minister for Reunification. Unification is their above all priority, their reason for existing.

  4. Good we have to push back against the apathy building towards a UI by clowns who think we can’t afford the few billion a year when we’ll have a 25 billion surplus this year.

  5. SF are likely the party that has been the biggest obstacle to reunification.

Unless a majority of unionists in the north are pro reunification, it would be violent.

I don’t see most people in the south wanting to go back to 1970s type violence in return for a United ireland

  6. That’s definitely one way to antagonize the loyalist population up North and guarantee reunification won’t happen.

  7. Would a good and logical step forward in the unification process.

South Korea have had a Ministry for Unification for years; albeit the other side of the Korean border is a bit different to the other side of the British border in Ireland!

  8. I don’t know, its not like reunification will be a sprint. It will take a few years from announcing a vote to unification actually happening. Enough time to set something up. At the moment its feels more like an antagonistic move, that may even backfire…

Presumably bundled in with other ministries because this really isn’t the sort of thing that a minister needs that be working on full time, or else their job would be fairly limited.

  10. Minister of State…. Not even full cabinet Minister.

And to think of the abuse shinners meet out to “West Brits” with “partionist thinking”

    A JUNIOR minister

    What a laugh

  11. To be honest I would much rather see a minister dedicated to looking after the interests and concerns of multinationals and foreign direct investment than just making unification concerns solely a minister’s job.

We are dependent on fluid multinational business activity for so much of our GDP. And other countries are trying to get them to leave here and go to there.

A better use of a dedicated minister would be this.

I am not apathetic about the situation in the North, but the change has to come from there most of all. Another few years of demographic shifts maybe.

  12. With the limited number of ministers in cabinet it’s a bit of a waste. That or it will be 3 or 4 mixed up and probably won’t get the attention it deserves.
