Heavy rain expected in Japan's Kanto region, Shizuoka, Izu Islands Weather officials are warning that heavy rainfall may hit the Kanto region in eastern Japan, Shizuoka Prefecture in central Japan and Tokyo’s Izu Islands through Saturday.

The Meteorological Agency says low-pressure systems are approaching coastal areas of Kanto, with warm, humid air flowing from the south. This has made atmospheric conditions unstable, with developed rain clouds covering the Izu Islands and other areas.

The agency says some parts of these areas may have heavy rain and thunderstorms.

In the 24-hour period through Saturday morning, 250 millimeters of rain could fall in the Izu area of Shizuoka Prefecture, 200 millimeters in the Izu Islands of Tokyo, 150 millimeters in the southern Kanto region and 100 millimeters in the northern Kanto region.

In the 24-hour period through Sunday morning, up to 150 millimeters of rainfall is forecast in the Izu area of Shizuoka Prefecture and the Izu Islands of Tokyo, while the southern Kanto region may be hit by up to 120 millimeters of rain during the same period.

Weather officials are urging residents to be on alert for flooding in low-lying areas and landslides.
