Tropical storms Krathon, Jebi may approach Japanese islands next week Japanese weather officials say Tropical Storm Krathon will likely approach the southwestern islands of Okinawa Prefecture next week.

The Meteorological Agency says a tropical depression developed into Krathon east of the Philippines at around 9 a.m. Saturday, Japan time.

Krathon is packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour near its center, with gusts up to 90 kilometers per hour.

Winds of at least 54 kilometers per hour are blowing within a 390-kilometer radius of the storm center.

The storm is expected to move north while gaining strength, and approach Ishigaki, Miyako and other southwestern islands of Okinawa Prefecture in the middle of next week.

The Meteorological Agency also says Tropical Storm Jebi was moving northward near the Mariana Islands in the Pacific Ocean, far south of Japan, on Saturday morning.

The agency predicts Jebi will approach the Japanese island chains of Ogasawara and Izu, and the Kanto region including Tokyo, in the first half of next week.

Weather officials are urging people to stay updated with the latest information.
