Visit Taiwan event held in Tokyo to attract more tourists from Japan Taiwan’s tourism authorities have held an event in Tokyo to attract more visitors from Japan.

Taiwan is known as a popular destination for Japanese tourists along with South Korea. But Taiwan’s tourism authorities say the number of Japanese visitors to Taiwan last year was over 920,000. The figure is less than half the level in 2019, before the spread of the coronavirus, as tourist demand was dampened partly due to the yen’s depreciation.

At the event on Wednesday, Taiwan’s Tourism Administration appointed Japanese actor Tsumabuki Satoshi as tourism ambassador.

Tsumabuki said that Taiwan is like a home away from home for him and he wants to promote the attractions of Taiwan that are not yet known.

Tourism Administration Director General Joe Y. Chou told the Japanese actor, “Let’s work together,” in Japanese and handed him a letter of appointment.

The footage showing the process of making a tourism promotion video, set to be released in October in Japan, was screened.

The promotion video was shot in four locations including Alishan, a tourist spot well known for tea in central Taiwan. Tsumabuki said picking tea leaves in Alishan was his most memorable experience.

The Director General said he welcomes people who have never visited Taiwan. He added that he also wants those who have visited Taiwan to come and find something new they can enjoy.
