New timetable is a disaster on my route anyway. I sometimes stay with my parents and commute to Dublin. The train I usually take into Dublin had its scheduled time moved back 10 minutes or so, and was moved a further 3 minutes back again in an attempt to alleviate delays. Despite it being that much earlier in the morning, it arrives in Dublin several minutes after its original scheduled time.

There is also a 30 minute gap in trains during the morning rush hour and the train after my usual one had its scheduled time moved forwards by 5 minutes and additional stops added, sacrificing those precious few minutes and rendering it effectively useless for people to get to the office for 9am. That means everyone is forced to pile onto my usual train and arrive in work early. Seems like a bit of shitshow to accommodate an hourly Belfast service that, from my point of view, is of far less utility.

  2. My response would be ‘dear useless government representatives, please build the metro, thanks’. Cos this is what you get when you continuously under invest or invest in wrong places when it comes to public transport. FF/FG have been in power in one form or another for the last century and have done fuck all for major PT infrastructure besides the DART in the 80’s and Luas in the 2000’s. They still tried to backtrack on the limited bus priority on the quays during the summer sure!

Irish Rail needed to implement the new timetable to accommodate the hourly Belfast-Dublin trains. There is no scope for expansion due to the limited land available along the corridor and especially around the city centre and Connolly (great forward planning by the government there) The only other way they could squeeze more trains in would be to remove level crossings, which motorists and NIMBY’s obviously won’t wear.

It’s also not just the delays and whatever else as detailed in the report. It’s now jammed on the commuter well before Skerries in the morning, people at Donabate and Malahide end up pushing in and it is dangerously crowded, too hot etc.

Absolutely terrible decisions from Irish Rail

  4. I have stuck to the car since Covid due to mobility issues. I previously rode that northern commuter train for 15 years and it was hell sometimes and always slow, overcrowded and miserable. The article talks about people in Donabate not even getting on the train something I remember back in say 2019 so nothing changes but with level of new builds in that town its only gotten worse I expect.

The article confirmed what I felt was the case with the train but it appears worse than ever so on I go in the car. In a normal country people would be all on the train but dysfunctional Ireland has one line and no metro. I will be long retired and I hope not but wouldn’t be surprised if there was still no metro and a crap train.
