ah, but that VAT is essentially flowing back to the government….

Is this bike shelter located inside the gates? If so, you wouldn’t even need to lock the bike. Simon is not going to steal Eamon’s bike.

They went with a custom job instead of an off the shelf one. What was that engineering place quoting 20k for a shelter and fit?

Small mercies, it could have cost €499,999.99.
> The OPW is now set to review its system that allows senior officials to sign off on spending under certain contracts of up to €500,000.

I imagine making the secretary general (or equivalent in the OPW) personally liable for these sorts of actions would cut a lot of nonsense out fairly quickly.

I still don’t get how anyone looked at that quote and said ”yeah, that sounds reasonable for a bike shelter”

The other day, one of the auld boys on site answered the phone(he’s a contractor) beside me:
Hello P, I’ve a bit of a job needs doing on a house …
– is it a big job?
– ye fullbuild from the ground up
– ah too big for me these days!
– did you retire yet?
– No I’m getting into them bikeshelters, sure you’d only need one before retiring

The steelworks are custom fabricated so it makes a bit more sense why the bike shelter was so comparatively expensive. Then the question would be why the necessity of a custom fabrication. And where that fabrication took place.
I’m sure there’s paperwork detailing the justification. The entire bike shelter seems to be entirely a uniquely designed job. Hence the pricing.

Serious question, is there any oversight committee or anyone monitoring this kind of spending to make sure it does not go off the rails? Begs belief how this stuff can happen and noone is held responsible

Who signed off on this, are we still waiting?

That is outwork drywork and day work. Why are all the figures to the nearest 1000.
If the surveyor was paid 500 a day then they were need for 22 full days.
Where is the engineering sign off na design fees. This looks like a school child made it up.

What granite works was done? That’s what I really want to know. I can get my head around alot of the rest.
“Dry works” is a nonsense description that is not common or ever used in construction so that’s more bullshit

Wonderful getting to spend other people’s money, spare no expense.
This is probably the total tax some people pay in a lifetime. All for a bike shed.

Ah they used unobtanium
Makes sense now
* Steel works: €121,000
* Granite: €45,000
* Surveying work: €11,000
* Outer work: €11,000
* VAT: €38,000
* Dry work: €30,000
