70mph – proceeds to demonstrate by lifting the rear wheel and gunning the throttle.
Yep physiks explained right there!
Sounds like an easy target picking Bank street / pickings rather than dealing with true crime in London.

The ones I see are beyond “e-bike” they are a silent but very rapid motorbike. No numberplate, riders completely out of control, all in black. I can understand that police likely can’t chase them (or after the events in Cardiff, even be near them) but they need tracking down and taking off the streets for sure.

I wish the term “e-bike” was for either pedal assisted limited bicycles OR electric motorcycles and NOT both.
I never refer to mine as an e-bike anymore, it’s always “electric bicycle”, it’s amazing, safe and keeps me from using my car.

I regularly see electric bikes and scooters in London whizz past at well over 40 mph. They’re often home made, ramshackle affairs and horribly dangerous. The riders seem determined to ignore all laws and even basic self preservation. I’ve yet to see a single one be stopped by the police.

I actually wouldn’t care if they weren’t so silent. The amount of times I’ve turned around due to a vague sense of something behind me for one of these or a scooter to just fly past me is insane.

There’s no way that something with a 2kw motor is hitting 70. You’d need at least 10kw to get anywhere near that (right at the edge of A1 allowance).

Thank God Sky are actually saying this. Every time I’ve dealt with the police they just call them all, e-assist or otherwise, e-bikes. “When you say e-bike” I ask the press office, “do you mean an e-assist or an electric bike that should by rights be called a motorbike?”
“We just say e-bike”. At least two different forces have said this to me.

155,000 e bikes sold in UK in 2022.
Police have confiscated 937 in a year.
Is this like the war on drugs?

They should be targeting the E-Motorbikes like surrons etc. not pedal assist bikes.

Unfortunately a small few idiots combined with the ignorance about them as can be seen in this post might kill off any fun that’d possible to be had with these.
An ebike can have 10kw or 250w pedals or no pedals, I say just limit the speed (like we do with every other vehicle). And as an engineer, I can tell you that you’ll never know without testing it either, I can buy a 250w hub motor from Amazon along with a battery and switch between 250w and 1500w (almost 40mph) outputs with the press of the button.
These laws are starting to make me want to move to America, seems like here with air rifles, drones, ebikes, normal people are punished by kneejerk law making instead of proper policing these fuckwits. It’s probably really not hard to break any of these rules for decades and not put anyone in danger or cause any issues whatsoever.
