US: Russia, Iran using generative AI to influence US presidential election The US government says foreign groups, including Russia and Iran, are using artificial intelligence to try to spread disinformation and influence the US presidential election.

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence published a report of its analysis on Monday.

The report says that “foreign actors, including Russia and Iran, use generative AI technology to boost their respective US election influence efforts.”

It says Russia has generated the most AI content related to the election in text, images, audio and video mediums. It explains the content tries to boost former President Donald Trump and emphasize divisive issues such as immigration.

For example, it assesses Russian influence actors were responsible for staging a video in which a woman claims she was the victim of a hit-and-run car accident by Vice President Kamala Harris.

The report also says Iranian actors have used AI to write inauthentic news articles in English and Spanish for websites that claim to be real news sites.

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence says generative AI is helping to improve and accelerate aspects of foreign influence operations, but so far the office has not seen it revolutionize such operations.

It adds that the risk to US elections from foreign AI-generated content depends on the ability of foreign actors to overcome restrictions and disseminate such content.
