  1. It’s at the point where if you select a course in Dublin you can’t really arrive now and say, jeez it’s expensive and there’s nowhere available.

  2. Don’t apply for a course if you can’t get accommodation or are not willing to commute.

Most of college could be part time online /part time on campus.

I heard they’re gonna start doing veterinary courses in SETU and ATU next year and its about time. The only place you can do vet is in UCD at the moment and has been since the 70s. That’s the dublin centric nature of this country. Even a job which is associated with rural Ireland can only be trained for in dublin

This might be the impetus to start increasing regional education opportunities. Let’s face it, dublin is no longer a feasible option for most people. It only barely was when I went to college and things have gotten way worse in the last few years.

  5. A demographic the current government unfortunately don’t seem to give a shit about.

Even turning some of what little student accommodation they have into IPAS centres.

Student representative groups & Student Union organisations go out of their way to scream support for mass immigration at every single opportunity.

A consequence of that has been the identification and re-purposing of student accommodation as IPAS centres coupled with significant upward pressure on the rental sector and more fierce competition for jobs when they do graduate.

Expensive life lesson but if there was ever a group that was conned & will now spend the next decade reaping the rewards (sic) of what they’ve repeatedly cheered on, its students.

    They should own it.

I don’t envy students now. There was a time when moving out of the family home to go to college was almost like a rite of passage. Getting a bit of independence and being able to engage in the social scene at the same time. I feel that a lot of students now are missing out on this now.

When I was a student in Dundalk IT, I rented a room in a house which cost me €35 per week. It sticks out in my mind because the euro had just been introduced and I was just getting used to it. I have no idea what weekly rents are like in Dundalk now, they probably aren’t as insane as Dublin, but most likely just as unaffordable to students who don’t have rich parents.

  8. Recently seen a lot of landlords with houses near colleges advertising their rooms to Ukrainians under the ARP scheme.
Why would they rent to a student for €600 when they can get €800 tax free for a Ukrainian.

  9. It’s not a million miles better in Maynooth for the second years I know. I’m a mature student, have own house, had a friend from Bulgaria ask (super stressed out about even asking) if he could crash here for a few weeks while he sorted something out. He had to get accomodation in Newbridge. It was literally all he could arrange
