  1. I used to make fun of socialized healthcare.

    Then I moved to Italy.

We are getting absolutely shafted in the US.

    Example:
I had a procedure done in the US just before I left for Italy. I had no idea how much it would cost. After the procedure, I was given a bill for $27,000+. The hospital, doctor, and insurance companies went back and forth a few times until MY co-pay dropped to $15K, then $10k, then $6k and finally $2.1k.

    Fast forward two years:
I have to have the exact same procedure done in Italy. I go to the hospital on the day of surgery and the woman at the counter tells me (In Italian) I need to pay 28 Euro.

“Is that for the paperwork?” I ask – “No” she replies, “that’s the cost of the procedure.”

Yeah… the same procedure I paid $2.1k for in the US – after going through months of insurance haggling hell – cost 28 Euro. And best of all, I was told UP-FRONT how much it would cost. No surprises. No haggling. No possible bankruptcy.

  2. The American medical system might be messed up. Where is our veteran healthcare system? Now that’s an utter nightmare.

  3. Wonderful-Cup-9556 on

Everyone in government profits from the US health care system- doesn’t matter if you’re blue or red- not going to change despite your voting

  4. That’s because healthcare in America is a FOR PROFIT industry. They can bankrupt you with whatever bills they feel like.

  5. That’s amazing that Australia has the best outcomes with the lowest spending. Seems like there should be some key takeaways somewhere for other countries to improve.

I do wonder if this is a symptom of a generally younger/healthier populace but seems like something worth looking at.

I do see the study likely being skewed heavily by COVID as explained in their health outcomes section. Would love to see this repeated on an ongoing basis.
