This article offers an introduction to the discipline of neuroscience. It is adapted from the inaugural *Stanford Emerging Technology Review*, a new science and technology policy education effort from Stanford University (School of Engineering and the Hoover Institution), intended to help citizens and policymakers better understand the potential societal impacts of emerging technologies.
This article considers the current state of research into neurodegeneration; the neuroscience of addiction; current obstacles in the field; and how discoveries from neuroscience are likely to become commercial products in the future.
While “popular interest in neuroscience vastly exceeds the current scientific understanding of the brain,” continued investigation assisted by technology and innovative research techniques is likely to drive progress in the field in the years ahead.
